Description

Understanding and Treating Early Childhood Stress
Presented by Tena H. Sloan, LMFT

This training offers a framework grounded in attachment theory and early
brain development that gives insight into how infants and toddlers
develop their regulatory capacities that result in optimal or traumatic
stress responses. The training also will give practical strategies for
treating stressed young children and their caregivers.

Educational Objectives
•     Demonstrate skills in applying a framework that links early
attachment relationship and early brain development with the regulation
system in infants/toddlers

•     Describe the psychobiological stress response system

•     Differentiate normal vs. maladaptive stress and anxiety as well as
traumatic responses in young children at different developmental stages

•     Identify caregiver stress and impact on coping capacity and social-
emotional development in young children

•     Recognize stress signs (behavioral cues, defensive responses, arousal
states, window of tolerance) in infants, toddlers and caregivers

•     Apply principles and practical strategies for intervening with young
children, caregivers and/or family systems affected by stress
